Modern Foreign Languages     Read our French policy here.

Studies show that children who are exposed to other languages early in life develop better linguistic skills and are more confident speakers than those who are taught a MFL later in life. Many of our pupils are already bi-lingual; the study of an additional language will help to further develop neural pathways and enable a child with EAL (English as an Additional Language) to make links between languages, which in turn promotes the development of a deeper understanding of the origins and meanings of the English language.

Learning a language in primary school provides children with skills that are essential for the twenty-first century. As the UK is becoming an increasingly multicultural society, we have a duty to provide our children with an understanding of other cultures and languages. At St George’s Prep we believe strongly that there are numerous benefits to be gained from learning a MFL and have therefore implemented the teaching of French for all children in KS1 and KS2.

As well as giving pupils the opportunity to learn a second language, (an increasingly important skill in our globalised society), learning French helps to promote and develop a broader intercultural understanding. The study of a second language also supports children’s literacy and oracy in school, by raising awareness of aspects of their own language(s), thereby enriching their understanding of both.
