Core Subjects

The core subjects of English, Maths and Science are taught in line with the National Curriculum programmes of study, but in greater depth and breadth than the requirements. We know that our pupils learn in different ways, therefore, teaching uses the 'active learning' model, with children being active participants, rather than passive receivers of information. We utilise the school's indoor and outdoor environments, as well as linking learning with fortnightly visits to our farm - which is great for hands-on Science work! Off-site visits and visits from experts help to ensure that our children see the relevance of their learning in the real world.

Learning at its best occurs when children are happy and secure, therefore at St George's Prep, we unofficially categorise PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) as a core subject, ensuring that there are no physical, social or emotional barriers to a child's learning.

Visits off-site enable children to see the relevance of their learning in the real world.

Continual informal assessment and twice yearly formal assessments of the core subjects demonstrate that our results remain enviably high, with (on average) 1/3 of each class working at a significantly higher level than the Department for Education's national expectations.

Information about how each subject is taught can be found by scrolling across from the Core Subjects page. If the answer to your question cannot be found, please contact us; we would be delighted to share our approach with you.
