St George's Preparatory School Facilities

The building in which our school is housed has been part of the fabric of our town since 1885.

Built by William Henry Wheeler as his main residence, the school has retained most of the original features that were designed and built by Mr Wheeler. As the town architect, he was responsible for also designing the cottage hospital, the corporation swimming baths, the docks and Lincolnshire's first public park.

Over the years, this grand old building has seen a number of diverse uses including a hospital, local rural council offices and a financial services business.

Since St George's took the building over in early 2011 we have kept the spirit of William Wheeler very much alive! Our school name was decided upon due to the many representations of dragons there are to be seen around the property. We even have our own "Dragon's Den", home to some rather gruesome hand carved wooden creatures and our very own gargoyle! There are numerous stained glass windows depicting various aspects of the natural world - clearly something Wheeler held dear; along with antique wall tiles depicting various scenes from William Shakepeare's well known plays. You couldn't hope to find a more inspiring building in which to enrich the minds of the next generation.......

As well as classrooms for every year group, we have a music room, assembly hall, library, medical facilities, art studio and a spooky attic. Outside we have a large tarmac playground, bark chipped construction zone, grassed games field, mud kitchen, fire circle and our very own magical woodland. How fitting then that the house designed and built by William Wheeler, himself a keen observer of nature and an advocate of spending time outdoors, be used to educate the workforce of the future using the environment he created all those years ago..........
